Detective Agency Zambia Zambia, unlike most of its neighbours, has managed to avoid the war and upheaval that has marked much of Africa's post-colonial history, earning itself a reputation for political stability. The landlocked country has experienced rapid economic growth over the last decade as Africa's second largest copper producer after the DR Congo. But its over-reliance on copper has made it vulnerable to falling commodity prices.
CrimeExtreme poverty usually results in a high crime rate and Zambia is no exception to this rule. The crime rate in Zambia is high and as in most countries, tourists may be targeted. Armed robbery, carjacking, petty crime and residential break-ins occur throughout the country. Bag snatching and theft from parked cars are common at some restaurants and internet cafes in downtown areas, particularly near bus and railway stations and in some shopping areas. This is particularly the case in Lusaka and Livingstone. There have been violent robberies (some involving fatalities) along the Cairo Road area of Lusaka, including Chachacha, Freedom Way and Lumumba Roads. Other ScamsTourists are frequently the target of small-scale financial scams involving bogus "fees" to be paid to various Zambian officials and groups. Ensure you receive an official receipt from the Government of Zambia for any fines and duties paid. Often, travellers will be told that the official does not have a receipt book or that this type of fine is not receipted. Polite, but firm, insistence on a Zambian government receipt will often result in these fines disappearing.
