Quezon City is the biggest city in the Philippines by population. Confusingly, Quezon City does not actually have anything to do with Quezon province. The city is located on the Guadalupe Plateau and has a tropical climate, prone to heavy rains and even monsoons. The city has experienced a high degree of population growth over the years, to the point where it has surpassed Manila to become the country's most populated city. Population growth is expected to continue.
It was against this bustling and exotic backdrop that Mark found himself sent from his company in the UK, to forge trade links with Philippine suppliers.
Wild night life
Mark had heard all the stories about the wild nightlife in the Philippines and was, like any red blooded male, eager to see if the stories he had heard were true. In the hotel that Mark was staying, while more permanent accommodation was been prepared for him, Mark met a German man called Heinz. They met over breakfast on Marks second day in the city, and Heinz, who was a regular visitor to the Philippines offered to show Mark around. When Mark finished work the next day, he found Heinz waiting for him in the lobby of the hotel with two beautiful Filipino girls.
A night on the town
The four set out for an evening on the town, and although Mark, who was a married man, felt a little bit uncomfortable having another woman on his arm, a few drinks soon settled him down. They visited a dance club and it was soon obvious that Mark and Heinz were being targeted. After an exhausting evening, and many approaches by beautiful girls Mark and Heinz arrived back at their hotel with the two original girls in tow and another girl who had joined them. In Heinz’s room they opened yet another bottle of champagne and before Mark knew it they were all naked and enjoying a wild session of group sex. He didn’t notice or maybe wasn’t concerned about one of the girls filming on her phone.
After that night, Mark was mortified. It was not usual behaviour for him, and he began to suspect that his drink might have been spiked. He began avoiding Heinz, although he noticed the German man coming and going, each time with a different girl on his arm.
It was a couple of weeks later, when he opened his email account to find a message from an address he didn’t recognise. The opened the email that was entitled
You’re famous Mark, won’t your family and friends be proud of you?
Mark was always very careful with spam emails, he knew better than to open attachments that might infect his computer but he had a very queasy feeling in his stomach and felt compelled to click on the link. There, unmistakably, he saw himself in the throes of passion with not only two very sexually liberated Filipina girls but to his horror, with Heinz as well. Mark had never had homosexual feelings and was now convinced, more than ever, that on that night his drink had been spiked.
The message with the film was unambiguous. Mark had to pay up or his computer mailing lists including friends and family and work colleagues would be receiving the film of him in his starring porno roll. How had they got his email address? Then Mark remembered. At the beginning of the evening one of the girls had asked him for it, saying that they were some events coming up locally that she would send him links for.
The company that Mark worked for in the UK were regular clients of Wilsons Detectives, so he did not hesitate to ring our Quezon City office. First of all, possibly in denial, he asked if we thought that the threat would really be carried out. Unfortunately our answer was a definite yes. We told him that this was a problem that we were dealing with more and more often for our clients. Sextortion, as it is called, is fast becoming the weapon of choice for blackmailers.
Ground breaking work
As experts in cyber crime we have done a lot of the work that has developed effective methods of combating this type of blackmail. Our experts, who are also local experts, took Mark’s laptop and within a very short time had identified the address the email had come from. They were of the opinion that it was probably a group, well known in the city, and as such it turned out to be relatively simple task to identify them and lead the police to them.
We cleaned Mark’s computer removing all traces of the infiltration by the sextortionists. Mark moved to his permanent accommodation shortly after that, and although initially he had declined the offer to move his family out with him, within three weeks they had flown out to join him, the children were settled in their new schools and Mark’s spare time was spent in family pursuits! Mark had a terrible shock, and had learned a hard lesson.
Wilsons Detectives are seeing an upsurge in this type of crime, especially in The Philippines.
