Because they have earned it. Nigerian are one of most feckless and dishonest nations on the planet ….along with the Philippines, Morocco and the Ivory Coast
Today, you hear a lot about online romance scams where the scammer pretends to be a soldier (usually U.S.) who is truly interested in a woman but needs money for something
** These three Nigerian nationals were convicted on a wide range of charges after being extradited to the U.S. Charges included identity theft and payment card fraud. One of the men, Rasaq Aderoju Raheem, was sentenced to 115 years in prison. Our government is taking these matters very seriously.
They play on the sympathy of the woman (it is almost always women being scammed in this way) by telling them they need money because their bank account has been frozen, or that they can’t afford the fees needed to take leave to come home.
These are all lies, because you don’t have to pay to take leave and you don’t have to pay for the forms you need to fill out to take leave. These guys have quite an imagination.
Sometimes they will ask for gift cards. An iTunes card is particularly popular. They sell the cards for pennies on the dollar to make quick cash.
Sometimes they get particularly bold and asks for access to their victim’s bank account information by telling them they need to make a deposit. After all, why not? You two are going to be married when he comes home and it is common to have joint accounts, right.
The Army Criminal Investigation Command runs a good site https://www.cid.army.mil/romance... explaining how to keep from being a victim of one of these predators, and what to do if you are victimized.
Here are some facts to consider when talking with someone claiming to be a U.S. soldier overseas who needs money: ·1. Soldiers and their loved ones are not charged money so that the soldier can go on leave. ·2. No one is required to request leave on behalf of a soldier. ·3. A general officer will not correspond with you on behalf of a soldier planning to take leave. ·4. A general officer will not be a member of an internet dating site. ·5. Soldiers are not charged money or taxes to secure communications or leave. ·6. Soldiers do not need permission to get married. ·7. Soldiers do not have to pay for early retirement. ·8. Soldiers have medical insurance for themselves and their immediate family members (spouse and/or children), which pays for their medical costs when treated at health care facilities worldwide — family and friends do not need to pay their medical expenses. ·9. Military aircraft are not used to transport privately owned vehicles. ·10. Army financial offices are not used to help soldiers buy or sell items of any kind. ·11. Soldiers deployed to combat zones do not need to solicit money from the public to feed or house their troops. ·12. Deployed soldiers do not find large sums of money and do not need your help to get that money out of the country.
To be fair, it is not only Nigerians who are pulling these scams, but it seems that this is where the problem originated.
One other thing, if you get an email out of nowhere from someone claiming to be a Nigerian prince who says he needs you to help him get large amounts of money out of his country, block that person and don’t look back. That scam is the oldest one in the book.
