Wilson’s Detectives Ransomware and Hacking - Blog 2
This is the second blog in the Wilson's Detectives series about hacking and it continues to look at the points from the first blog with what you can expect if you are the victim of hacking.
A ransomware message pops up
This is one of the worst things that anyone can see when the screen is suddenly taken over and they see a message that says that all the data on the system has been encrypted. The only way to unlock it will be to pay a ransom and some of these demands can be huge. Despite the fact that in 2017 this kind of activity did decrease little it is now back with a vengeance now and billions of pounds and dollars of thousands of man-hours have been lost where systems have been hacked. People have paid ransoms and lost money. And no one is beyond being targeted. Whether a small-business, big business, the police, a hospital - even an entire cities infrastructure has been ground to a halt as a result of a Hacking attack and ransom demand. About 50% of victims will pay the sum they are asked for. Unfortunately this rarely stops the hacker who will be back to demand more.
At Wilson’s detectives we are proud to be at the cutting-edge of tackling cybercrime and we would never advise you to pay a ransom. We get calls from many people who have been targeted and who have not paid the ransom and we will always be able to tackle the problem for you. There are specialised cyber security insurance firms and they are often involved in the pay-outs when a ransom is demanded but they report that only about 40% of the time do systems return to their normal operational state.
What to do next:
If you have been targeted then get in touch with us immediately. We will be able to test your systems and if you have good tested data backup there is a good chance we can get your system restored. Unfortunately not every company invests in this type of efficient backup system, and we can advise you as to what type of system will be best for you in the future. We recommend off-line backups. However ransomware is becoming more sophisticated and the bad guys are usually in step or a step ahead.
Cloud backup services will backup copies of your data but don’t think you will be immune from attack because you use a cloud system. Not every cloud system will have the ability to recover after a ransomware attack. There are also websites online that say they can help you recover files without having to pay the ransom.
If you have had become a victim of ransomware attack, don’t delay, contact us now. We can help to restore your systems and advise you on what you can do to ensure that’s your don’t fall victim again and that you have the systems in place that you need to protect you.
